Richard Croft ‘From Paint to Print’

Richard Croft ‘From Paint to Print’

“I have been painting for well over fifty years, and became interested in printmaking in the late 1960s. In 1977 I was awarded a Fellowship in Printmaking in the Art College in Belfast, where I learnt various techniques including screen, etching, lithography and relief printing. Since 1984 I have been working in the Lodge Studio, Dundrum where I now specialise in lino printing relief work.

I often make a print based on a painting. I like the challenge of breaking down the many subtle colours in a painting to a maximum of eight or nine in a lino cut. I find the directness of working with cutters very satisfying, so very different from paint brushes, which results in strong, clean, linear shapes and patterned textures.

I have the use of an excellent old press used by Mark Toby (an American abstract artist) and also Michael Rothenstein, who both worked in London in the 1930s. I limit any edition to around 24 as to print more becomes tedious. To see, laid out on a table, an edition of completed prints is most satisfying and exciting.”
